MOUNT EVEREST VIDEO LINKS

Hopefully these videos will add something to the blogs I've already written on mountains, and the Himalaya in particular. I'll post more links as I find them, there are so many out there, but not all are as good as they promise to be!

It is incredible to think that there are only very poor quality photographs from the early ascents in the Himalaya, and many climbers didn't even get summit shots of themselves. But now the technology is such that just about everyone carries a video camera  and a satellite phone to the summit!

Everest itself is getting rather busy with tourists and political protest these days, so if you want solitude and a purer mountain experience you are better off searching out less frequented summits. But it remains the highest point on the planet, and is therefore rather special. Enjoy these clips, which I hope will inspire and provoke in equal measure.

Everest from the north (Tibetan) side. This is the side the pre-war British expeditions took, with the age old question of "did Mallory and Irvine make it?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlWL_s52YPE

Everest via the south-east ridge on the Nepalese side, which was eventually climbed in 1953. This should inspire a few of you!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STFb-aPYYM8

As more and more people climb Everest there are inevitable questions about morality, this clip makes you think! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P71Nc3bFlxA

Check out the wonderful writings of Joe Simpson if you want to know more about the issues of life and death on mountains.
