Olympic Greats - Linford Christie

Biography

The oldest man to win an Olympic 100m title, Christie claimed the 1992 title in  Barcelona aged 32.In all he competed in three Olympic Games.

Coached by Ron Roddan,he was 26 before he won his first major medal.  With a reputation for his 'presence' on the track he became the world's number one in the most fiercely competitive event and prestigious event in athletics the men's 100m.In an international career spanning seventeen years Linford competed over 60 times for his country and won more major championship medals (23) than any other British male sprinter, the pinnacle his Olympic title. He was the British team captain from 1990, a year that saw him claim his second European Championships 100 metre title, and his first Commonwealth Gold.

Linford became the first man to retain the World Cup 100m crown, and in 1994 won an amazing sixth European Cup title and a thrid World Cup title. This total was added to in 1995 and 1996 with European Cup victories in the 100m and 200m to make him the holder of eleven titles and was unbeaten by a British athlete for eight years (until 1996) over 100m.

Linford's impressive title collection includes Olympic, World Championship, 3 European, 3 Commonwealth, 10 European Cup and 4 World Cup Gold medals.
