Hello Shipmates,
Its a great life on the Ocean wave.
Six of us turned up at Milsey Bay, NorthBerwick abour 9.30.p.m. on Friday 8th of June bedecked with head torches and light sticks to sea kayak around the Bass Rock in the scary black dark.
The sea was as smooth as liquid chocolate with a gentle swell lazily making its way through it to the beach. The Bass Rock was jutting out of a totally calm sea like a pebble on top of a flat mirror.
Eevery available space seemed to be occuppied by pairs of Gannets who were not for moving under any circumstance.
After circumnavigating the Island we headed off to Seacliffe Beach following the G.P.S.
A colony of seals were resting on a finger of rock off to our left and extending out into the sea for about half a mile called St. Baldreds Boat. In the pitch dark their calls to each other were greatly amplified and the air was full of their loud mewing.
A nice swell had developed and the beach was reached through 3-4 feet surf which was quite exciting in the dark. Out came the various whiskey flasks and I reckon that the Laphroig tasted the best but I had to taste it a few times just to make sure.
Out through the surf and by now (Midnight) it had gotten really dark and our paddles began to produce clouds of bioluminecent sparks in the water. Our glowing lightsticks made us look like Chinese lanterns floating along on a beautiful sea. The sky was clear with many stars and just a hint of mist in the distance.
We landed at North Berwick about 1.a.m.
These trips are not just for the few if you fancy experiencing trips like these contact The Borders Canoe Club at BBNLL@sea49.wanadoo.co.uk. It only costs a fiver a year to join.
