WORLD MASTERS ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Ace's talk of Poly Vets and the misunderstandings use of the word "vet" can lead to has prompted me to write this blog! Orienteering used to have the Worlds Veteran's Championships, but it was always referred to as the "World Vets", and you can imagine what that led to!

For the last few years it has been known as the World Masters, which of course leads to questions about what you then call the female competitors, but I digress!

Go to http://www.wmoc2007.fi/eng/ for info, photos and results from the 2007 competition that finished recently in Finland. It was dominated by Scandanavians, even more than usual, but we have got a British World Champion in Liz Campell who won the W50 age group. Not only did she win, but she won by nearly 5 minutes, a huge margin in elite orienteering terms, brilliant effort by Liz.

There was even a 93 yr old World Champion, although it must be said that he was competing against himself in the M90 category. Still, to complete a course over rough terrain at 93 takes some doing, so fair play to the guy. I hope I'm still alive at 93 let alone still competing!
