Beach Sports Programme in Brighton

The summer 2007 programme of beach sports events has just been announced for Brighton.

Beach volleyball, ultimate frisbee and footvolley events will be staged at the NIVEA SUN Yellowave beach sports centre in Madeira Drive, Brighton.

The programme begins with the “Lamisil Footvolley International” over the weekend of July 21st and July 22nd. The UK’s top footvolley ball teams will be taking on some of the best teams from across Europe. Footvolley is a Brazilian sport, similar to beach volleyball, but involves keeping the ball in the air by using legs, chest and head, but not arms and hands.

“Footvolley is a very exciting new sport”, said Spencer Mintram a former semi professional footballer and director at Yellowave. “Having played it myself, I can see why the Brazilian footballers all have such sensational ball control. It involves a fast moving combination of overhead kicks, dives and headers”.

On Saturday August 4th the venue will stage the NIVEA SUN Ultimate Frisbee showcase. This is the latest US craze now hitting the parks and beaches. “This is a 4 a side sport where the aim is to place the frisbee in the end zone using throwing skills and athletic agility”, explained Spencer Mintram.

The three day event from August 31st to 2nd September sees the NIVEA SUN VE national beach volleyball tour coming to Brighton for the first time. The top juniors, women and men’s teams will all be competing, with the finals on the Sunday. “Not only is this the first time the UK tour has come to Brighton but this is the finale of the summer’s tour,” said Katie Randall, a top British volleyball player and Yellowave director. “With players’ eyes on gaining a place in the 2012 British team they will all be competing fiercely to move up the rankings. The Brighton finals promise to be a thrilling climax to the UK tour”.
