This reminds me of one of those bizarre childhood memories that sticks with you forever. I've never tried proper pole vaulting, in my day it was way beyond what most schools considered viable. But I do remember my Mum saying that when she was a girl (in the 1930s) she did "prop jumping", using an old wooden clothes prop. Mind you, when my brother and I tried it with her clothes prop she hit the roof!! Can you still get clothes props, or is it all those rotary airers now?
