| Description: | Synchronised swimming is often described as ‘water ballet’, because of the dance-like movements swimmers make to music, and its theatrical character. Even though it looks like one of the easier Olympic disciplines, synchronised swimming actually calls for strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry, and special endurance breathing techniques. In order for the athletes to stay longer underwater and perform routines, they use clips on the nose which prevent intake of water through the nostrils and allow them to stay underwater longer. Hair gelatine and water-resistant make-up helps highlight the athlete’s appearance, while underwater speakers transmit the music into the pool, helping the swimmers stay synchronised while underwater. |
