Description:

This photo gives some impresion of the steepness of the snow and why we had to fix ropes as a safety precaution. This is the last section before the ice cave.

What I like about this shot is the thinking or opportunity or dedication of the cameraman. So here I am hanging onto a rope in case I fall back a few thousand feet - what shall I do? Ah yes - let go and take a cracking picture. Unless of course you are triggering it some form of remote - but I doubt.

One of my "core values" (as David Brent would say!) is that I believe firmly in one of the first laws of physics. That of "conservation of energy". So whenever I am climbing, or doing anything to be honest, I do like to stop and conserve energy on a regular basis. But then I get bored if I'm not doing anything, so my other core value is "while I'm here I might as well take a photograph". When I'm on a mountain I often wonder why many of my colleagues have hundreds of pounds worth of camera gear stashed in the bottom of their rucsacs? Mine is always in a protective pouch, but readily accessible. Time will tell whether the new generation of digital cameras are as robust in this respect as traditional SLRs.
